The Best Snorkeling, Scuba Diving and Underwater Fun in Cancun
If you’re headed to Cancun on vacation, chances are you know about the destination’s white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters; and if you didn’t know, allow me to tell you about it! Indeed just off the coast of Cancun, there’s plenty to do in the water including non-motorized water sports and a wide variety of over and underwater tours. Having explored Cancun by land and by sea here are a few of my favorite things to do on, in and under the water while I’m there.
Cancun & Isla Mujeres Underwater Art Museum – For the snorkeling and dive enthusiasts out there, this underwater attraction is a must see. Located in the strait between Isla Mujeres and Cancun, Cancun & Isla Mujeres Underwater Art Museum is an artificial reef made of over 400 concrete sculptures of humans and everyday life. They are secured to the sea floor at different depths so that they can be enjoyed by both snorkelers and scuba divers. The life-sized art sculptures were placed here to take some of the stress off of the over-visited reefs in the area by drawing some of the tourists to this area to give the reef a chance to regenerate.
BOB – A groovy underwater scooter of sorts, the BOB looks like something out of a James Bond movie. BOB stands for Breathing Observation Bubble and that’s exactly where you put your head. The viewing bubble is attached to the top of the scooter and, as you ride along underwater, you easily breathe the air pumped into the bubble. As you glide along effortlessly through the ocean you can see plenty of marine life, coral reefs and other underwater wonders on the ocean floor. It is quite the experience and tons of fun.
Scuba and Snorkel – With crystal clear water surrounding the destination, it should be of no surprise that there are plenty of scuba and snorkel options in Cancun. Depending on your skill set and comfort levels, you can find a wide variety of options from deep water dives, shallow snorkel trips, rides to the reef on wave runners and kayaking snorkel tours. Be sure to check out a tour that includes one of the areas fresh water cenotes. This is completely different than snorkeling or diving in the ocean and it should be experienced at least once. Diving in one of these sinkholes connected by an underground water system is especially fantastic.
Whale Sharks Excursion – Explore the incredible world of the whale shark as they migrate each year between June and September. Book a tour that will take you near Isla Holbox where these giants of the sea gracefully swim around and allow you to swim and snorkel with them. These are not dangerous animals. Although they can reach an amazing 50 ft. long, these docile creatures just seem to float around the surface of the waters feeding on plankton. Don’t miss the incredible opportunity to swim with the Whale Sharks and take home and experience that you will talk about for years to come.
The great thing about being on vacation is the freedom to do as much, or as little as your heart desires. But, if you’re looking to explore outside your resort, you may consider a spin, swim or snorkel just offshore.
