Dublin: Hop-On Hop-Off
A great way to get an orientation of the City of Dublin is to spend a day on the Dublin Bus Hop on and off double-decker bus tours. Departure is from the Tourist Information Center in the city center at Suffolk Street, in the former St. Andrew’s Church. You can pick up all kinds of maps, buy your Dublin pass, or even have a snack here. Your ticket is valid for 2 days and with one paying adult, 2 children under 14 are free. You can also get discounts are the various sites that the tour stops at. You will have live commentary on the tour by tourist board accredited guides.
The bus will stop at 23 different sites. I like to visit Dublin Castle to see the old dungeons below and the fabulous 18th c. staterooms. Next you can go to Christchurch, the oldest cathedral in Dublin, the interior is worth the stop. Then head next door to Dublinia to learn about the origins of Dublin in Viking and Medieval times. Great fun for the children.
For lunch: if the weather is nice, pick up some fish and chips and eat them in a local park, or you can find a restaurant or café nearby. After lunch take the bus to Phoenix Park and the Dublin Zoo. Over 230 species are represented here in natural habitat settings. There is a petting zoo for the kids and several playground areas throughout the zoo. Upon arrival check to see what times the zookeepers will be talking about the animals in their care. After your visit catch the bus home. Be sure to ask what time the last bus visits the zoo when you arrive.
