Napa Picnic Lunch

The Napa Valley is an easy, gorgeous 60-90 minute drive from downtown San Francisco. Spending a long weekend touring its wineries and restaurants is a vacation experience to itself (and one you should consider), but if you’re only there for a day trip, make the most of your time. One of the best ways to do that is to put together a Napa picnic lunch between the tours and tastings.

Oakville Grocery

Oakville Grocery is your first stop. Tucked into the front corner of Opus One’s vineyards, Oakville Grocery has some of the best gourmet sandwiches you’ll ever have. Order one in your Vintner’s Boxed Lunch. The Fresh Mozarella Sandwich and the Smoked Ham & Brie sandwiches are amazing. Since they can get really busy, call in your order ahead of time and pick it up on your way.

V. Sattui Winery

V. Sattui Winery is about 5 minutes up Hwy 29 from Oakville Grocery. The winery itself is nice, but its real claim to fame is its large picnic area and its cheese selection at the Italian deli inside. In fact, V. Sattui might have the best cheese selection in the entire valley. Depending on what kind of wine you’ve picked up during your winery tours that day (if you haven’t, V. Sattui has a solid selection to choose from inside the store), talk to the guys behind the counters about what cheese(s) pair best. Take their suggestions, then grab a baguette or two and head out to the tree-shaded picnic area. NOTE: if you’re visiting during the high season, get there on the early side because the picnic tables will fill up. Also, check the weather from the previous couple days because if it has rained much the grounds tend to get a little soft and muddy.

Other Winery Picnic Grounds are a second option if crowds or soggy ground put a damper on things over at V. Sattui. A significant number of wineries in the valley have picnic areas open to visitors. Scout out the wineries you are planning to visit to see if they have grounds that will work for you. Clos du Val, another Traterra favorite, is back down across the valley on Silverado Trail. Its picnic grounds are exceptionally romantic.
