Service-Inspired Travel: A Family Affair
What inspires you to travel? For some, it’s adventure, for others, escape. For 12-year-old Alaina Rivera (pictured below right), it’s to change the lives of others. Last summer, the young Minnesotan heard about H2O for Life, our partner organization that funds clean water projects around the world. She immediately wanted to learn more and get involved. Alaina created her own service project for H2O for Life, called Wishing Well, in an effort to raise money to provide children in Guatemala with clean water.
Alaina got to work right away and urged her family and friends to become involved. She purchased supplies for “water balloon flip-flops” with her own money and has been working hard with her sister, Willow (pictured below left), to make them and raise money through selling them. Alaina has raised more than $300 already and is working to organize a Water Walk at her school to help raise additional funds.
But Alaina didn’t stop there. Through H2O for Life founder Patty Hall, she discovered Traterra’s service-inspired trip to Central America this August, in which travelers complete a one-day volunteer project at a local school through another non-profit organization called Pueblo a Pueblo. After inspiring her mom and sister to secure their spots, Alaina got her grandmother, aunts and cousin to sign on as well. In August, the seven of them, along with other travelers, will journey to Guatemala and Honduras for a 9-day trip of a lifetime. Alaina will be able to see first-hand the difference her fundraising efforts will make in the lives of the local children. A portion of each traveler’s trip cost will be donated to future programs in Guatemala, so Alaina’s inspiring efforts will continue to change lives even after she has returned home.
If you’re passionate about the global water crisis like Alaina, or are looking for an enriching summer experience, get ready for a life-changing vacation.
